Pursuant to Proclamation No. 837 s. 1991, the Library and Information Services (LIS) Month is commemorated during the month of November of every year, in recognition of the need to focus public awareness to the invaluable service that libraries and information centers render.
The celebration highlights the important role of libraries and information centers in upholding culture as well as its values.
This year’s event is aslso in recognition of the need to focus on public awareness on the various services rendered by these centers and information custodians and librarians across the country.
The National Library of the Philippines (NLP) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts-National Committee on Libraries and Information Services (NCCA-NCLIS ) will lead the celebration with the theme “Ang Kulturang may Malasakit, sa Silid-Aklatan ay Makakamit”, from Nov. 5 to 28.
To promote public awareness in the observance of the event, all Department of Education offices and schools are encouraged to undertake related activities, such as hanging of 2018 LIS Month official streamers in all offices and schools; dissemination of the LIS month advocacy materials; participation in the online campaign thread about the observance by uploading photos, news features, and other information relative to LIS Month 2018 using the hashtag #28thLISMonth; organization and participation in library-related activities such as lecture demonstrations, conferences, fora, book fairs, book drives and storytelling.
For the past year, partnerships among government agencies, particularly the NCCA through its National Committee on Library and Information Services (NCLIS) under the Subcommission on Cultural Heritage headed by Commissioner Fr. Harold Rentoria OSA, the NLP, Philippine Librarians Association Inc., and various organizations, have made the celebration possible.
