ROLE OF COMMUNICATION IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP
EDNAR RIVERA CORPUZ
Communicative competence and leadership styles play a vital role in managing an organization; they may break or build. The leader or the head of the school must also be good in communication, not just in oral language but also in the form of written language.
Since school leaders are one of the important elements in overall growth and development school institutions, their professional leadership role should be attractive and it influences on their job satisfaction. Job satisfaction helps in achieving objectives of educational system effectively and efficiently. (Monkumar & Nadisha, 2015).
In this fast paced environment where the interaction of individuals with other individuals has become very important, we most certainly feel the need for good communication skills. A human being who has an excellent expression would be able to become a good manager; the use of appropriate words at the appropriate time is the key to becoming a first class leader. People would pay attention to such a person who is lucid in his expressions and would willingly follow his lead, thus their work efficiency would be enhanced as they would be fully confident of what they are doing. On the other hand, study on leadership skills and styles of school heads have been an increasing focus of many researchers. Widespread recognition of the influential role principals’play in school improvement has spawned a flurry of interest and research across a number of related areas (Allan Walker, 2011).
Shukla (2009), defines a leader as one who acquires the job completed by his group without making them feel as subordinates. Moreover, a leader must be opened to suggestions and good ideas from his team members. Covojas (2012), cited that effective communication skills were the most important hiring criteria identified by the superintendents among principals. With this notion, good communication is always associated with good leadership.
Good communication is the very life energy of leadership. Take away communication, and leadership withers and dies. Leaders can accomplish nothing without clear, compelling, credible messages that inform, influence, inspire, and involve people. Hence, if one is dreaming of becoming a good leader, he or she may start by being a good communicator as well.
