BEING MODEL CITIZENS TO CHILDREN

-

EVELYN L. BALINGIT

Children are very flexible little beings. As early as 3 years old, parents – sometimes unknowingly – already contribute to the “image” of their kids. They mimic what they see and hear from us – and accept these as “right”.

We should be careful when kids ask us amusing questions, because our answers shape their view of the world around them.

We spend a lot of time with children at home and at school, so this is where they acquire certain aspects of their image. Again, we should be careful of our answers and body language around them, as they would most likely “copy” our habits and values – and even the way we talk.

Also, they may pick up one or two of our interests – like reading a book – which will they bring with them as they grow up.

Outside-of-the-home experiences also shape the way children think and how they understand the world. Even as we guide them, we should let them make mistakes, so they can get a better understanding of what went wrong and what should be done. Let them have their own preferences.

As parents, it is our job to be there for them – and to make them aware that they should make their own decisions when the time is right. Of course, we would want to protect them from harm and pain, but we should also realize when we have done our part already – and letting them explore life on their own.

Remember, we should leave children a legacy – one that would give them happiness and fulfilment. This should be our priority. In doing this, let’s empower them to be their own person. They should make their own decisions, see what is right from wrong, and make sound choices that would be beneficial to them as adults.
