STUDENTS NOWADAYS

- VICTORIA M. TAN

In my almost 15 years of teaching, I could say that students’years back are really has a big difference nowadays. Their attitude towards schooling is quite different now. Before, two or three students would have been stubborn especially in doing school tasks and the rest would do what was required. And this is an opposite with the present situation in classroom. Very few students seem to follow rules unless they know that somebody is watching over them. Many students are outright vulgar to anyone who speaks them and disobedient if the teacher is trying to address somewhat. Sometimes they come to class with the attitude that teachers are there to serve them and that they are there because it is their right to be in school. In relation to the policy that no child left behind has turned into make sure they all pass whether they learn anything or not and be sure you don’t hurt their feelings in the process that somehow pampers students so much.

As agent of learning, if we raise standards to assure quality education we should start seeing students rising and meeting new levels of expectation-higher level. It is very frustrating to see that students come to school unprepared, not doing homework, sleeps in class, and do not study for tests. The worst thing is the blame is always on teachers despite their effort to get them daily do school tasks properly.

Home is a big factor as well as access to technology which on the other hand brought less value on education among students despite the immense advantage the technology is contributing to all of us. As a result, most students do not know how to be patient, their perspective in everything is mostly instant because they feel this world could give everything they want. Like education, they look at it as their right to have it and not something that they could have to work for. As partner of teachers parents should also be responsible to instill a sense of personal responsibility in their children so that they would be responsible enough in school. We always hear this saying that education starts at home. May all the parents see the significance of their involvement in the development of their child. It is a cornerstone in child’s education.
