EFFECTIVE APPROACH FOR MODERN YOUTH
LOVELY JOYCE P. AGUILUS
Millenials of today are entirely different. To be nice all the time to students whatever the situation maybe or not? To be terror teacher that every students fear to gain respect or no? Looking at the school set-up nowadays and reminiscing the past moments in my school life, there is a great difference in the behavior of students. A comparison of attitudes and behavior between the young ones from the new generations to understand better why there have been a new way of disciplining the millennials.
Old days are entirely different. Remember the days wherein not a single student could touch the table of a teacher, we shout or raise our voice when a teacher is around, and when we see a teacher walking towards our direction , we become like water in the ocean divided in half and allow the teacher pass by conveniently and most of the time offer assistance even without them asking. Even after being scolded or punished for our wrongdoings, we still manage to stand our feet and move on with our life happily together with my friends. How did we develop that kind of attitude and behavior? From our teachers who taught us to respect our elderly and practice self-discipline. What kind of approach? In the past, fear was somehow instilled in us to eventually respect our teachers out of that feeling. Punishment was basically the way to discipline during my time. But that fear taught us to be better persons and to strive harder even in the midst of difficulties.
Millenials act differently. The new generation wherein our future depends on them? A different approach to discipline them is needed for they are far more different from our personal experiences and the way they cope with situations is not the same as before. Positive discipline is the new way in dealing with millenials who commit mistakes. Explaining to them gently the proper attitudes and behavior, getting their attention discreetly when they misbehave so as not humiliate them or have a one-to-one talk and make clear to the erring student what should be the proper attitude in the classroom. That is for the millienials. Positive discipline. That is.
