TEACHING MATHEMATICS IN TECHNOLOGY
Jenie R. Dimarucut
“Teaching mathematics in a technology classroom requires more than simply using mathematics with technology. It requires designing the lesson to focus, motivate, and highlight the mathematics in a meaningful way.” - Eli M. Silk, et al
Technology is a useful tool in the teaching and learning of Mathematics as it provides various resources that can be utilized in designing the lessons and activities that would help students to better understand its concepts. Technology, when used effectively, where students are active participants in the teaching-learning process, would bring about positive effects and would yield to better results. Many activities often found in technology classrooms are likely to develop students’ mathematical abilities. It is also believed that technology within mathematics instruction helps students develop advanced solutions and understanding of these solutions critically (Litowitz, 2009).
Technology-based instruction in mathematics leads students in developing higher order thinking skills which in return provides them the needs of applying mathematics in their everyday living and other disciplines. Mathematics taught within skillfully planned technology education lessons presents students opportunities to understand mathematics in contexts that can lead to interdisciplinary connections (Silk, Higashi, Shoop and Schunn, 2010).
Mathematics leads the students towards their intellectual fulfillment of searching, discovering, reasoning and finding new and extraordinary relationships. Understanding of Mathematics could aid students become more open-minded in their problem-solving skills. With this, strategies in teaching mathematics are seen to be an excellent principle for its lessons, as they are engaging to both students and teachers. Mathematics tends to be a differentiated work with paper and pencil routine assignments. Approaches and strategies in teaching Mathematics like the utilization of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) would help improve positive relationships among students.
