HOW TO BEEF-UP ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS?
Maricel I. Santos
Each public elementary school aims to strengthen the brilliance, gift, talent and skills of pupils. Teachers, as well, are dreaming of developing their students’ reading, writing, arithmetic and comprehension skills. But molding the young minds of our future hope of the nation is not as easy as ABC…it needs a lot of strategic planning and innovation.
On my own perspective, there are some ways of uplifting the quality of education that we could give to our learners and if given attention by proper authorities, will somehow diminish their downgrading learning experiences.
First, lessons and performance activities in speaking and reading must be integrated on all learning areas. This can help them master the skills. Aside from that, it will also be helpful if activity sheets may be given for free to retain mastery. They should also be given a 1:1 ratio of textbooks which will mean availability at all times. Other reference materials should also be provided for further research. Every school must also have their own multi-media rooms for film viewing and analysis. Manipulative instructional materials and visual aids properly aligned to the curriculum distributed equally by the government is also a great help towards an excellent teaching and learning experience.
The department should also design a program which will enhance the sports and musical abilities of learners. Most importantly, beyond all of these innovations, values formation and character building must be the core in teaching.
