CONTEMPORARY ISSUE: FREUDIAN PSYCHOLOGY AND HOMOSEXUALITY

Sigmund Freud was a German Jew whose youth was marked by serious personality problems. These difficulties started him on a journey aimed at understanding the roots of personality. According to Freud, there are three basic components of personality; id, ego, and super ego. The personality was motivated throughout life by the fundamental drive called libido. He expanded too much on the importance of sexuality as a determinant of personality. Freudian Psychology considered only the biological composition of man. It theorizes that man is a helpless victim; he has no control; his feelings are molded by the unconscious. This gives too much emphasis on sexual drives which negates man’s freedom and spirituality. His theory reduced man to an animal who is not thinking and has to always seek pleasure by the satisfaction of sexual drives.

The Freudian Psychology justifies the issue on Homosexuality. But what’s wrong with this issue? Homosexuality is unnatural and perverse; that is, it is against the laws of God and the moral laws of nature. Since the primary purpose of sexuality is to procreate, homosexuals obviously cannot accomplish this. Homosexuality is perverting the true meaning of sexuality. It is egoistic and not geared towards self-giving. It attempts to proselytize (that is, gain followers or adherents for its cause), thereby undermining our traditional cultural values. In this proselytizing process, young boys and girls are often molested. If this proselytizing process is greatly successful, what will become of the human race when procreation is no longer feasible? Homosexuality is indeed offensive in our heterosexual activity.

However, legislative moves have been in progress against homosexuality. But contemporary society emphasizes equal chances and options to all genders, thus giving all the opportunity to live respecting individual rights and privileges. With this on hand, where are we directed to? The answer relies on how deep our moral principles and faith in God is. May all be guided by HIS loving care to mankind.
