Is Vargas anti oldies?
THE latest word from Ricky Vargas is he wants 70-year-olds and above to be banned from holding positions in the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) board.
Quite a daring stance by the usually feisty Vargas, like a defiant Trump continuously not wearing a face mask in his public appearances.
But no surprise there from Var gas.
The guy just loves to test the waters at every opportunity, seemingly, if not go against the current if only to pursue what he believes is a gamechanger in our often outmoded fabric of exi st en ce.
“It would be beneficial to the POC if we give a chance for the younger generation to serve our people,” Vargas said in the last PSA (Philippine. Sportswriters Association) Forum presented by Smart, San Miguel Corp., Pagcor, Go For Gold and Braska Restaurant at Amelie Hotel.
He could be a bit bold like a high-stakes gambler, but Vargas, in fairness, has the moral suasion to grab the bull by the horns, so to speak.
As a former POC president, he knows where he is coming from.
Thus, if his spin might be interpreted as a pointed hit on Peping Cojuangco, the man he succeeded at POC, Vargas, if I know him that well, wouldn’t mind. Cojuangco was in his 80s when Vargas defeated him some years back.
“I’m doing this because I feel this is important,” said Vargas, president of the country’s boxing association and who was accompanied in the Forum by his secretary general, Ed Picson.
“It’s all about giving way to younger generations,” said Vargas. “Give them the opportunity to run the organization.”
In the same Forum, Vargas, also the chairman of the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association), likewise batted for POC officials to be president of just one sports association as he noticed that some POC board members are presidents of several sports associations.
He concluded his discourse by saying that sports associations no longer recognized by their international federations be automatically dropped from the POC roster.
In pursuit of his proposals, Vargas said he would propose to amend the POC Charter towards this end.
Good luck, Ricky.
