The Importance of Mental Health Awareness Among Students

-

Nowadays, mental health awareness has become an important issue in the classroom. Aside from academic knowledge, teachers have to discuss mental health with their students, as well.

Mental health awareness could become the first line of defense for students. When they are aware of mental health issues, they would have the knowledge to address them, or have the courage to seek help.

Students suffering from mental health issues tend to underperform in school. They lack the motivation to study and often neglect their school requirements. They also tend to isolate themselves or at worst, hurt themselves. To avoid these scenarios, it is crucial to include mental health awareness in the school’s curriculum.

Once mental health awareness becomes part of the school’s curriculum, teachers play an important role in guiding their students. Some of the key elements of teaching mental health awareness to students include self-care and taking responsibility for their own health and wellness.

Teachers can start by guiding their students in setting personal goals that allows selfmanagement and self-monitoring. When students have clear goals in school and in their lives, they will know where and how to improve, so they can reach their goals.

When students set goals, they become resourceful. They tend to do researches or activities that can help them achieve their goals. With this in mind, students stay motivated and focused.

Most importantly, teachers should encourage their students to reflect on their activities. Taking time to reflect on their achievements can help students realize what they are missing or lacking in successfully achieving their goals.
