The Role of Parents in Education Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic.

This was the challenge posed by Secretary Leonor ‘‘Liling” Magtolis- Briones of the Department of Education during one of her speeches amidst COVID -19 Pandemic. It may sound challenging but emphatically the teaching-learning process must continue and the role of all the stockholders is essential in attaining a quality-assured education this time of pandemic.

During this time of pandemic, the role played by parents is certainly important. Their strong partnership between with teacher is doubtlessly needed in the implementation of whatever teaching- learning modalities will be use this academic year. The continuity of the learners’s education this academic year will be greatly attributed to PARENTS and to their STRONG PARTNERSHIP with the members of the teaching force. Their willingness to be involved in the teaching-learning is very much needed - but how can we get them involved and have their full participation in the process.

Certainly, there are several ways to make them involved and get their full a strong teacher -parent partnership towards quality- assured education.

First, there must be OPEN COMMUNICATION, a clear and honest communication between teacher and parents is vital. Both of them are responsible in tracking the academic progress of the learner.

Second, PARENTS MUST BE INFORMED that during the pandemic it is not possible for the teacher to personally check the learners from time to time, thus, parent must double their effort on parenting by constantly checking and confirming the learners progress to their teacher. The responsibility of giving instruction to the learners is no longer a mere responsibility of the teacher but also of their parents. Parents are effective substitute as teacher at this time of pandemic.

Third, PARENTS MUST HAVE THE WILLINGNESS TO COOPERATE. If the parents are willing to cooperate and are ready to go the extra mile just to achieve a successful continuing education of their children, then this new normal we have in education will come to fruition.

Finally, SET COMMON GOAL AND OBJECTIVES. Teachers and parents must set a target. They should set expectations on what’s going to happen within the period of remote education.

Parents know their children more than any teacher does while teachers know how to give instructions very well. If this knowledge will be combined, educating the children amidst this pandemic will succeed. The skills parents and teachers have, have a common purpose: to support the continuous learning of the children. This is the very foundation of a stronger partnership!
