Modular Learning Approach
Charmaine S. Lacayanan
According to Dejene and Chen modularization is based on the principle of dividing the curriculum into small discrete modules or units that are independent, non - sequential, and typically short in duration. Modular approach to teaching enables the learner to have control over his/her learning and accepts greater responsibility for learning. For elementary pupils they can ask help from their parents, guardians or even their siblings to answer the modules.
Modular instruction is an alternative instructional design that uses developed instructional materials which are based on the needs of the students. Students are encouraged to work on various activities that are interesting and challenging to maintain focus and attention, thereby encouraging independent study this was cited by research paper of M.T.B Nardo that was published in American Journal of Educational Research in 2017. She also added that the benefits of using modules for instruction such as the acquisition of a better self-study or learning skills among students. Students engaged themselves in learning concepts presented in the module. They developed a sense of responsibility in accomplishing the tasks provided in the module. With little or no assistance from the teacher, the learners progressed on their own. They learned how to learn; they were empowered.
This pandemic scenario has brought a great challenge to our Philippine educational system keeping abreast with the goal of continuing the schooling of our students. Whatever means of modality we prefer on these different blended learning no student would be stopped and be left behind in the fulfillment of their dreams. For us teachers it is a battleground of challenges but a noble opportunity in serving the best we can to our learners , school, community and the nation.
