STUDENTS’ MENTAL HEALTH IN EDUCATION
ANALE B. NUCUM
In the shadow of the pandemic, mental health became more apparent considering isolation, social disadvantages, and physical and emotional changes. On top of surviving the pandemic and its diverse impacts, the pursuit of education frequently comes with immense pressure and stress, which may significantly affect students’ well-being. The pressure to perform well in their academic journey leads to heightened stress and anxiety. The fear of failure, parental and societal expectations, peer competition, and the uncertainty of the future constantly burden students’ minds. Despite collective reminders that life is beyond academics alone, these can severely compromise students’ mental well-being, which in due course may lead to overwhelming feelings, burnout, depression, and, worst, self-doubt. Such mental health issues have the consequences of adversely affecting students’ energy levels, concentration, mental ability, dependability, optimism, relationships, and collaboration. As mental health issues both impact students' individuality and interpersonal aspects, it is of essence to recognize the vital role of educational institutions. Foremost, creating awareness and reducing the stigma incidental to mental health issues allows students and relatives to understand the importance of mental well-being and motivates them to seek help as necessary. This can be conventionally done through public seminars, open discussions, workshops, and educational campaigns. Moreover, proffering a safe space for students to express and assert themselves and their concerns through imparting professional guidance with accessible and private counseling services. Incorporating well-being into school programs and projects can promote stress management approaches. Fortifying healthy competition instead of an over-competitive environment can attenuate conflicting pressures students face. These and other initiatives can establish educational institutions as effective support systems for students’ mental health, in collaboration with parents and guardians, mental health professionals, and other stakeholders. All things considered, educational institutions that prioritize mental healthcare have the compassion and propensity to foster a nurturing environment whilst promoting healthy coping mechanisms, resilience, and mental well-being.
