The Philippines has experienced mixed emotions in response to Sara Duterte's selection as the Department of Education's (DepEd) Secretary. Overseeing the country's educational system as a seasoned politician with a track record of leadership has both potential advantages and disadvantages.

As the previous mayor of Davao City, Sara Duterte has demonstrated her ability to make challenging choices and successfully carry out programs. Because of her expertise, she may be able to take on strategic leadership roles inside the DepEd and address important concerns in the education system. Duterte's background in local government may provide insightful knowledge of the particular difficulties encountered by various regions in the Philippines. With this knowledge, solutions could be developed that are specifically aimed at addressing regional differences in educational access and quality. Duterte may adopt novel teaching and learning practices given her reputation for creative governance. This might entail adopting tech-enabled learning settings, implementing contemporary pedagogical methods, and pushing for curricular changes that correspond to shifting market demands.

The history of Duterte demonstrates a dedication to enhancing the conditions of marginalized communities. In order to ensure that educational opportunities, resources, and standards are equally dispersed across all social strata, equity could be prioritized during her tenure as DepEd Secretary. Due to her contacts and prior experience in public-private partnerships, Mayor Duterte may be able to organize partnerships that contribute more resources, knowledge, and technology to the educational system, thereby improving student learning outcomes.

On the other hand, considering her ties to President

Rodrigo Duterte's family, one of the main concerns of

Duterte's choice is the possibility of nepotism. Critics contend that, even if she is competent for the role, such appointments could damage credibility and openness.

Duterte has a varied history in politics and law, but she has no direct expertise in education.

Duterte's decisions at the DepEd could have political repercussions because she is a well-known political figure. This can make people question her leadership's objectivity and impartiality. Critics are concerned that

Duterte's administration may put systemic improvements before the immediate demands of teachers. The quality of instruction delivered could suffer if issues related to the welfare and professional development of teachers are not addressed. Some people worry that Duterte's nomination would concentrate too much influence in one family, potentially obscuring the varied viewpoints and voices required to properly drive educational reform.

The appointment of Sara Duterte as the DepEd Secretary could have both positive and negative effects on the

Philippines' educational system. Her background in governance, dedication to equity, and capacity for creative policymaking give hope for constructive change. However, concerns about nepotism, her lack of experience in direct instruction, and the possibility of political prejudice also call for cautious examination. The country will be closely monitoring Duterte as she assumes this crucial position to see how she navigates these challenges and works to create a more promising future for the Philippine educational system.
