BASIC KNOWLEDGE IN MAINTAINING HOME AIR-CONDITIONING MARLON A. CANLAS

-

In a humid country like the Philippines, an air conditioner plays a vital role during the summer months. When temperatures start to rise, a well-maintained air-conditioning unit is a must.

We all know that neglecting to maintenance our AC units will lead to a steady decline in performance while energy use steadily increases.

To ensure the efficiency of your air conditioner, routinely replace or clean its filters. This is the most important maintenance task. Clogged and dirty filters will reduce the amount of airflow and significantly reduce a system's efficiency.

When airflow is obstructed, air can bypass the filter and deposit dirt directly into the evaporator coil. This will impair the coil's heat-absorbing capacity. So replace your clogged filter and lower your air conditioner's energy consumption by 5% to 15%.

Remember, filters may need more frequent attention if the air conditioner is in constant use.

You can also extend the life of your AC by keeping blinds or shades down during the day or install awnings to shield south-facing windows from intense sun. Running ACs with floor or ceiling fans will help circulate cooled air more effectively.

ACs should also undergo a yearly cleaning schedule that goes beyond just cleaning the filters. Clean and inspect coils, adjust and replace fan belts, lubricate motors and bearings, clean and check blowers and fans, inspect controls and safeties and check refrigerant and pressures.
