CHALLENGES IN LEARNING ELECTRICAL SKILLS
HONORIO M. PALO JR.
There are a lot of challenges for students when undergoing Electrical Installation and Maintenance (EIM) programs. These include inadequate knowledge and lack of resources and training. Because of their age, Grades 11 and 12 learners still have inadequate knowledge in domestic installation and wiring concepts. Another challenge is that learners do not yet have any enlightenment on the prospects of having knowledge in EIM. They may not receive any guidance and counseling. There is also the fact that educational facilities lack the proper equipment to teach EIM. This leads to a negative public perception on the program. These are just some of the factors affecting student enrollment in EIM programs. There are several recommendations to address these challenges, including the provision of career guidance services, which would help parents develop interest and enroll their children in EIM programs. Teachers must also possess the necessary skills for training students, and workshop facilities should upgraded to acceptable standards. In addition to this, there must be integration of Information and Communication Technologies in the program, promotion of collaborative work, offering of remote learning options, and developing new assessment systems can increase student interest in the subject. According to the World Bank, there is a significant gap between the skills needs of employers and the skills produced by higher education institutions in the Philippines. The report highlighted the need for proper regulation and relevant skills development in the higher education system.
