ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
MYKA G. LUMANOG
What happens in our immediate surroundings is thought to be related to the condition of mother nature or our surroundings at the moment. It is a well-known fact that certain occurrences, such intense rainstorms, storms, and floods, are beyond human control. Even the current situation demonstrates that some environmental phenomena—like mega typhoons—occur more frequently than experts had previously anticipated. The earth's condition and the state of the environment are deteriorating with time, so it is critical that the next generation understands the environment and how to help preserve it for the benefit of future generations. Including these issues and concerns in the lessons that are being taught in each classroom is the best way to educate the younger generation. It is impossible to escape the lessons that have been established, thus the method used to incorporate environmental awareness must be engaging to the students who will be exposed to its concepts. The inclusion of environmental issues in the curriculum is mandated by Republic Act 9512. It is imperative to ascertain its real usage in the classroom, nevertheless. The redesigned curriculum, according to Aklilu (2012), makes it evident that environmental issues have been incorporated in a variety of methods to aid students in understanding the situation and motivate them to effect the change the world needs. The Department of Education (DepEd) incorporates environmental awareness concerns into their curricula from both the public and private sectors, including childcare, elementary, and high school, as well as tech-voc courses and after-school youth programs. It is now expected that these youngsters would develop into responsible, civic-minded adults who cherish and care for the environment on a local and global scale. Students will be made aware of the importance of environmental conservation, restoration, and protection.
