In teaching and learning, visual devices supply one form of aid to attention, understanding, imagination, and incentive to action. Visual devices are used to attract attention. The teacher who has a repertoire of good visual devices at hand usually maintains full class attention. Visual devices are also used to facilitate reasoning and understanding. The fundamental reason for the use of visual aids is to aid reasoning and understanding. Visual devices are further used to stimulate imagination and provide incentives to action.

The use of visual aids should be well planned by the teacher. The teacher needs to have all visual aids properly classified and ready for instant use, they should arrange in order so that each will be used in proper turn.

Where mechanisms are involved, they should be carefully checked to insure their perfect working condition before use.

Visual aids should be used to supply adequate imagery in some particular subjects. For example, in the study of plants and industries such as visual aids as pictures, films, slides, and graphs are rich sources of imagery for the pupils. Vivid and realistic imagery should be evolved with care, Visual aids can be used as means of correcting inaccurate imagery. Visual aids should be used only when the lesson presented does not furnish a basis for appreciation. The approach to a new lesson or subject may be made more attractive and more interesting by the use of concrete materials. Through the use of visual aid it is possible to arouse interest in learning. The teacher can, likewise maintain full class attention through the use of visual aids.

Varied type of visual devices should be used. It is an accepted fact that a variety of visual aids reduces monotony to a minimum. Pupils should be encouraged to collect illustrative materials from home magazines and other publications. This can be done during an activity period. Different types of learning call for different types of visual devices. In the k to 12 Basic Education Curriculum the pupils also need the instructional materials like the computer or the audio video materials to show their skills and abilities so that they will become globally competent learners.
