MAXIMIZING THE BENEFITS OF IN-SERVICE TRAINING DURING SEMESTRAL BREAK
MAYLYN T. PARAS
It is semestral break time in most of the public schools. While students are taking their mental health break, teachers are having their inset. In-service training is a critical component of professional development, providing teachers with opportunities to enhance their skills, stay current with teaching trends, and contribute more effectively to their organizations. To truly get the most out of in-service training, school heads and leaders need to approach it strategically and with a commitment to ongoing learning. Now, let us explore various strategies to help teachers make the most of their inservice training during semestral break.
1. Establish Clear Goals: Before beginning any training program, it is crucial to set clear objectives. What specific skills or knowledge do you want to acquire or enhance? By defining clear goals, you do not only provide direction for your training experience but also enable yourself to measure your progress and achievements.
2. Actively Engage: Participate actively during in-service training sessions. Ask questions, contribute to discussions, and seek clarification whenever necessary. Active participation in training activities not only reinforces your understanding of the content but also demonstrates your dedication to learning, both to trainers and your peers.
3. Apply Learning to Real-Life Situations: To truly internalize and retain new information, find ways to apply what you have learned to real-world work scenarios. This may involve incorporating new strategies, methodologies, or tools directly into your daily tasks. The more practical and applicable the training is to your job, the more valuable it becomes.
4. Seek Continuous Improvement: Training should be seen as an ongoing process rather than a one-time event. Continuously seek opportunities for learning and growth, even after completing a specific training program. Embrace a mindset of lifelong learning and actively look for ways to enhance your skills and knowledge.
5. Reflect and Evaluate: After each training session, take time to reflect on what you have learned and evaluate how it can be applied in your work. Assess the impact of the training on your performance and identify areas for further development. Regular self-reflection and evaluation will help you make the most of your training experience.
6. Share Knowledge: Don't keep your newfound knowledge to yourself. Share what you have learned with colleagues. Actively sharing knowledge not only reinforces your own understanding but also contributes to a culture of continuous learning within your organization.
Remember, effective training goes beyond simply attending sessions. It requires active engagement, practical application, and a commitment to continuous improvement. By following these guidelines, you can make the most of your training experience and enhance your professional growth.
