SURVIVING IN THE GEN Z CLASSROOM
CESARY Y. SACDALAN
The Generation Z comprises of individuals born roughly between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, who are now enrolled in secondary level. As educators, it requires an understanding of their characteristics, preferences, and learning styles to fully engaged them as they are shaped by growing up in a highly digital and interconnected world. To survive and effectively teaching Generation Z, one must possess the characteristics and be able to integrate several factors that will motivate the Gen Z students to love learning.
First, we must embrace technology. There is a need for us to harness technology into our lessons to improve the level of engagement of our students. We may utilize educational apps, online resources, and interactive platforms to make learning more dynamic. Use technology to provide timely assessments and constructive feedback on their work, helping them understand their progress and areas for improvement. While technology is integral, balance it with offline activities to promote a holistic learning experience. Also, include multimedia elements such as videos, podcasts, and interactive content in your lessons. Visual and auditory stimuli can enhance understanding and retention of information. Next is we must foster individualized learning and promote soft skills such as collaboration. Generation Z values collaboration and teamwork. Incorporate group projects, discussions, and activities that will encourage them to work together and share ideas. Likewise, offer opportunities for self-directed learning and allow flexibility in how students demonstrate their understanding. Furthermore, we must be authentic, relevant, and transparent as Generation Z values authenticity. Be genuine in your interactions and provide transparency in your teaching methods and expectations. Connect lessons to real-world applications and demonstrate the relevance of the material to their lives. Generation Z is motivated when they see the practical implications of what they are learning. Generation Z tends to have an entrepreneurial mindset. Encourage them to explore and develop their own ideas, fostering creativity and innovation. Certainly, by understanding the characteristics and preferences of Generation Z, we can create a more engaging and effective learning experience that aligns with the needs of today's students.
