Once again, the In-Service Training (INSET) for Teachers deemed this school year while learners are on their mid-year break. INSET is a series of days, normally 5 per school year, to receive Continuing Professional Development (CPD) or are given time to complete administrative tasks. In-service education can simply be defined as the relevant courses and activities in which a serving teacher may participate to upgrade his professional knowledge, skills, and competence in the teaching profession.
It can be said that INSET is a continuing and practical activity for teachers to develop professional knowledge and skills throughout the education process. INSET can take different forms in attempting to achieve different objectives in order to bring change in education. Participation in effective INSET changes teachers' knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs and improves classroom practice and student learning. However, the change in teachers' practice can occur only if in-service training leads to profound changes in teachers' knowledge, skills, attitude, and beliefs.
Why, then, is it important to have an INSET? In-Service Training (INSET) has been considered as crucial to the maintenance and sustaining the capacity of the teacher to continue in providing quality teaching and learning in the classroom.
Finally, in-service training is meant to improve the knowledge, skill and ability of teachers. It is meant to make the teacher more committed and effective. In-service teacher training enhances the performance of a teacher. A teacher feels enriched with additions of ideas, concepts and activities. In-service training improves the overall personality of a teacher. Inservice education and training (INSET) improves various aspects of overall performance of a teacher.
