BRACE YOURSELF AND BE MATATAG!

- CESARY Y. SACDALAN

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said that “nothing is permanent in this world, except change”. On August 10, 2023, in Pasay City, Vice President of the Philippines and Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd), Sarah Duterte, unveiled the MATATAG curriculum that would be implemented starting in the school year 2024–2025. The main objective of the MATATAG curriculum is to solve the problems with the present K–12 curriculum, including its crowded material, improper placement of required learning abilities, and unbalanced cognitive load. MATATAG means, “Make the curriculum relevant to produce job-ready, Active and responsible citizens; TAke steps to accelerate the delivery of basic education services and provision facilities; TAke good care of learners by promoting learner well-being, inclusiveness learning, and positive learning environment; and, Give support for teachers to teach better.” The MATATAG curriculum has fewer learning topics so that students may concentrate on fundamental abilities. The present curriculum was claimed to be 70% "decongested."

The upcoming transition is fortunate for the future of our country since curriculum revision is critical to maintaining the relevance, efficacy, and alignment of our educational institutions with the changing requirements of society, the workforce, and students. Furthermore, as technology becomes integral component of our lives, a modified curriculum can incorporate technology effectively, enabling students to become digitally savvy for learning and innovation. A revised curriculum can also integrate strategies to cater the diversity of all students so they can receive equal opportunities to grow.

Curriculum revision is an ongoing process that needs to adapt to the demands of the constantly changing world we live in. It's important to focus on improving student learning outcomes for both instructors and students. I'm excited about the numerous opportunities that the MATATAG program offers our students for learning and development. Let's seize this chance to strive for continuous reforms and advancements in our country's educational system.
