DepEd Memorandum 001 s. 2024 states that the “Catch Up Fridays” program will dedicate half of every Friday to reading and the other half to values, peace and health education.

It is no longer surprising that the new generation's performance decreases in reading skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving because of gadgets, time management, and other factors. A new memorandum released by DepEd Secretary Vice President Sarah Duterte was implemented last January 2024. One way to provide an immediate solution to increase the results of the Philippines in literacy, numeracy, and comprehension capability is the implementation of Catch up Fridays'. It aims to teach children how to read, count, and understand the reading selections. In addition, teaching good manners, knowledge of peace, and health awareness are included.

As math teachers, we browse some strategies to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of the students. 1. Establish a welcoming and inclusive classroom atmosphere where students feel free to ask questions and take chances with their education. This will foster a supportive learning environment.

2. Employ a range of teaching techniques: To accommodate various learning styles and keep students interested, use a range of teaching techniques, including visual aids, practical exercises, group projects, and technology.

3. Establish precise learning objectives. Students should be made aware of the expectations and learning goals in a clear and understandable manner. Divide difficult ideas into smaller, more doable actions.

4. Make learning more relevant and engaging for kids by connecting literacy and numeracy skills to real-world scenarios. Demonstrate to them the practical applications of these abilities.

5. Promote reading: Create a love of reading in your pupils by offering a variety of books and reading resources that meet their interests and reading levels. Give children the chance to talk about and share their reading experiences.

6. Practice problem-solving by incorporating exercises that call for students to use their numeracy knowledge in practical settings. Motivate children to exercise critical thought and solve problems on their own.

7. Give pupils positive feedback on their progress and areas for growth on a regular basis. Encourage pupils to reflect on themselves and give them the chance to evaluate their own work.

8. Customize instruction: Acknowledge that every learner is unique in terms of their learning requirements and skills. In order to differentiate instruction, provide each student more assistance or challenges according to their own needs.

9. Work together with parents and guardians: Include parents and guardians in the educational process of their child. Provide them with tools and techniques to help them practice reading and numeracy at home.

10. Continuing professional development: Give educators the chance to improve their knowledge and abilities in the teaching of reading and numeracy. They will be able to use successful teaching techniques as a result.

Remember that developing reading and numeracy abilities is a process that takes time, regular effort, and community support from educators, parents, and other stakeholders.
