ASSESSMENT AND TECHNOLOGY

RAFFY JAN P. ANGELES

Assessment is a process that is used to keep track of learners’ progress in relation to learning standards and to provide a basis for the profiling of student performance on the learning competencies and standards of the curriculum. It serves as the link between teaching and learning. It entails gathering and analyzing the gaps between knowledge delivered and knowledge retained.

Learner assessment results are one of the most important, if not the most important, elements of school assessments. The outcomes of the tests are used to track learners' progress as well as the teacher's own development. It cannot be overstated that these data must be processed with extreme caution and diligence.

Processing learners’ assessment results is tedious when done manually. When many learners are involved, manual processing of test results is tedious, time-consuming, and vulnerable to errors, especially when a significant number of learners are involved. Moreover, teachers processing learners’ tests are not only burdened with marking tests but with teaching and other teaching-related activities and other ancillary work. This, along with other tasks, negatively affects the quality of life of teachers because these processes must be carried out in a continuous cycle.

Using technology to process assessment results has the potential to enhance teachers’ wellbeing by lowering the workload related to manual labor. Systems, techniques, and procedures for automation increase the efficiency, accuracy, and dependability of a range of previously performed human tasks. This entails enhancing current M&E (monitoring and evaluation) procedures being used in school, early gap detection, and prompt delivery of learning interventions to learners thus improving learning outcome and school performance.
