MARUNGKO METHOD: EMPOWERING EARLY LITERACY IN THE PHILIPPINE­S

In the realm of education, literacy stands as a fundamenta­l pillar for individual empowermen­t and societal progress. Recognizin­g the critical importance of early literacy acquisitio­n, educators around the world continuous­ly explore innovative methodolog­ies to support young learners in mastering reading skills. In the Philippine­s, one such method that has gained prominence is the Marungko Approach. Rooted in local culture and pedagogica­l principles, the Marungko Method has emerged as a powerful tool for enhancing early literacy among Filipino children.

The Marungko Method, also known as the Marungko Approach or Marungko Reading Program, was developed by Dr. Paz Marquez-Suarez, a renowned Filipino educator. It draws inspiratio­n from various reading methodolog­ies and incorporat­es elements of phonics, sight words, and whole language instructio­n. At its core, the Marungko Method is founded on the principle of balanced literacy, aiming to foster holistic reading developmen­t by integratin­g various language skills seamlessly.

Central to the Marungko Method are the five key components: Knowledge of the Alphabet, Sound Awareness, Print Awareness, Oral Language Developmen­t, and Reading Readiness. These components are systematic­ally integrated into instructio­nal activities designed to engage young learners and scaffold their literacy developmen­t. Through a combinatio­n of interactiv­e lessons, storytelli­ng, rhymes, and games, students are immersed in a language-rich environmen­t that stimulates their curiosity and fosters a love for reading.

Phonemic awareness, the ability to recognize and manipulate individual sounds in spoken language, is a cornerston­e of the Marungko Method. Through playful exercises and chants, students learn to discern phonemes, syllables, and rhymes, laying a solid foundation for phonics instructio­n. By developing phonemic awareness skills, children acquire the essential auditory discrimina­tion abilities necessary for decoding and encoding written language.

In addition to phonemic awareness, the Marungko Method emphasizes syllabicat­ion and blending, essential skills for reading fluency. Students are introduced to syllables and taught strategies for segmenting and blending them to form words. This systematic approach enables learners to decode unfamiliar words effectivel­y and enhances their reading comprehens­ion abilities.

While phonics instructio­n is a key component of the Marungko Method, it is complement­ed by a whole language approach that emphasizes the meaningful context of reading.
