THE WEIGHT OF THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF READING
MARY AGATHA CLARE C. LUGUE
Reading is one of the core skills that every child must learn and develop in order to succeed in school and in life. The ability to read, though one skill, connotes many other skills as it is the starting point of wider learning, hence, the acquisition of many other skills. Reading is a life skill. Much of what we do every day involves reading.
It can therefore be said that developing functional individuals means developing individuals who know how to read. It is by this reason that schools all around the world put high emphasis on the teaching of reading among their learners. Hence, teachers devote much time and effort closely reinforcing and monitoring each of their learners’ reading progress.
With utmost initiative and creativity, teachers craft reading remediation and intervention activities to enhance the reading skills of the learners. By engaging the learners in specialized reading programs, their reading abilities are strengthened and their literacy capacities are heightened.
Furthermore, providing learners with a positive reading environment enables them to develop the love for reading. Hence, reading becomes not only skill they need to develop but a hobby they enjoy.
Through the schools’ continuous strive to cultivate readers, a positive and a competent reading culture is imbibed among the learners. Hence, reading becomes the strength that empower learners to progress in greater learnedness.
