EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE
PAULYN R. ESPINO
We all know that teacher-leaders play an active role in motivating their learners, leading to effective performance. Thers is so much value in having an effective leader who possesses the leadership traits, competencies and leadership styles that are needed to create an impact on the overall performance of learners. Leaders should also be aware what composes a good team, aside from having the necessary traits, competencies and leadership styles. It is also important for leaders to understand and know their learners and the people they work with to ensure effectiveness and ultimately contribute to performance. There are various leadership styles which they can employ in the classroom, but remember that there is really no best style. It depends on the teachers and the students they teach. There are different types of leaders -- authoritative, coaching, affiliative, democratic, pacesetter and coercive. A teacher may use a combination of the six styles. An authoritative leader is one which promotes a vision with specific actions for its attainment. The coaching style meanwhile requires a leader’s expertise and time but is rewarding in the end. The affiliative style creates a happy ambiance, and gives positive feedback, while a democratic style is consultative in nature, where learners feel they are involved in decision-making. Pacesetting and coercive styles are only used sparingly or only when the need arises as this most likely kills a student's motivation. Leaders use a variation of leadership styles depending on the situation confronting them.
