STA. MARIA NHS LAUNCHED PROJECT LICENSED PEER TUTORS (LPT) FOR LEARNING
REY MARK A. IBAY
Sta. Maria National High School – Macabebe introduced a learning support program/system/project that is based on the concept of peer tutoring. Peer Tutoring emphasizes the role of the learners to create learning and is based on a social constructivist view of learning where learners are being coached by peers through social interaction within their zones of proximal development (Vygotsky, 1978).
The use of the peer tutoring technique has also been proven to have a substantial impact on students' learning and success. Peer tutoring is one of the regarded as an effective technique of instruction for helping students improve their academic performance when compared to a group of regular classroom contexts (O’shea & O’shea, 2010). It is supported by Ullah, et al. (2018) who mentioned that slow learners' academic performance may be enhanced if they were involved in collaborative work or peer tutoring. These have influenced the researcher in looking for interventions for learning. Peer tutoring technique will be effective in helping learners to improve their academic performance for there are learners who are learning with peers especially through collaborative learning, modelling, scaffolding and peer assisted learning.
The data below shows the performance in Filipino 10 of a particular class in grade 10 for 1st and 2nd quarter of the school year 2022-2023. The data revealed that during the first quarter, 6 out 33 with a percentage of 18% of grade 10 leaners performed outstandingly with an average mean of 81.03, and there were 9 out 33 learners with a percentage of 26% of students with an outstanding performance with an average mean of 84.33 during the 2nd quarter. There are 11 learners (32%) who have fairly satisfactory performance and 5 students (14%) who did not mean expectations or obtained a grade of below 75 during the first quarter in Filipino 10. On the second quarter, there are 10 learners (30%) who have fairly satisfactory performance and 1 learner (3%) who did not mean expectations or obtained a grade of below 75. Meaning, the class has a satisfactory performance in Filipino 10 in the two quarters of the present academic year. Motivating learners to participate in peer tutoring in addressing learning difficulties while meeting an outstanding academic performance are the main goals of the project.
The proposed project LPT (LICENSED PEER TUTORS) for LEARNING is classroom and school-based learning system that is different from the usual form of remedial sessions that is being implemented in the school as this is aiming for an outstanding performance of the learners ranging their grades from 90 to 100 using project LPT (Licensed Peer Tutors) for learning to produce peer tutors for other struggling learners. Basically, this project will help struggling learners in accomplishing certain learning tasks, assessments, and assignments with the assistance of the Licensed Peer Tutors or the qualified learners/tutors. This will also assist teachers in conducting remediations especially to learners who did not meet expectations. This will provide teachers with interventions on improving learners’ academic performance and on promoting outstanding performance in all learning areas.
It is highly believed that when learners consistently considering this project in all learning areas, it is possible for them to meet the standards of being an academic awardee considering the set qualification standards. The output of the project is a classroom and school-based learning program that is to be believed effective when implemented within the school year towards improving the performance of learners in academics.
