LAC SESSION: AN EFFECTIVE MEANS OF PROFESSIONAL GROWTH OF MATHEMATICS TEACHERS
ROMMEL M. SAN MATEO
DepEd Order #35, s.2016, commonly referred to as the Learning Action Cell (LAC), serves as a School-Based Continuing Professional Development Strategy for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning within the K to 12 Basic Education Program. This policy emphasizes DepEd's support for nurturing the potential of teachers, aiming to guarantee their success in professional development. Learning Action Cell is a group of teachers who engage in collaborative learning sessions to solve shared problems encountered in the school facilitated by the school head or a designated LAC Leader. The topics for LAC session are depending upon the needs of teachers and students. The focus is on Learner Diversity and Student Inclusion, Content and Pedagogy within the K to 12 Basic Education Program, as well as Assessment and Reporting in the same program. Additionally, attention is given to 21st Century Skills and the Integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in both instruction and assessment. Curriculum Contextualization, Localization, and Indigenization are also essential components. Teachers are encouraged to explore how community linkages can support the curriculum, and LAC (Learning Action Cell) sessions are seen as opportunities for their professional growth. Moreover, LAC sessions should address urgent issues or concerns related to teaching and learning.
The field of education, particularly in mathematics, is constantly evolving, demanding educators to stay updated with the latest teaching methodologies, curriculum changes, and advancements in the subject. To meet these challenges, Learning Action Cell has emerged as effective means of fostering professional growth for mathematics teachers. LAC sessions provide a collaborative and supportive environment where teachers can engage in meaningful discussions, share best practices, and improve their teaching skills.
As a Mathematics teacher, I believe that LAC session is a program of DepEd to support teachers especially the mathematics teachers in their professional growth journey. LAC sessions typically consist of regular meetings or workshops where teachers come together to explore innovative teaching approaches, exchange experiences, and engage in reflective practices. It is a school-based session that offer a safe space for teachers to learn from one another, discuss challenges, and celebrate successes. LAC sessions facilitate the sharing of successful teaching strategies, classroom activities, and assessment techniques among teachers. This collaborative exchange allows teachers to adopt proven methods and adapt them to suit their unique teaching styles and student needs. Teachers can assess their teaching practices critically, identify areas for improvement, and set professional development goals. LAC sessions keep teachers informed about the latest trend in teaching to make sure that they are well-prepared to implement the updated content and teaching methodologies. LAC sessions offer a supportive community where teachers can receive constructive feedback from their co-teachers. This feedback promotes self-awareness and helps them develop their teaching techniques. For many teachers, participating in LAC sessions develops their confidence in their abilities. The positive reinforcement and encouragement received from peers contribute to a stronger sense of self-efficacy. Furthermore, interacting with like-minded colleagues who are passionate about teaching mathematics develops enthusiasm for the subject and motivates to inspire students. That is why, LAC session has a great impact on the professional growth of mathematics teachers towards the development of their teaching practice and improvement of students’ achievement.
