DEPED MAKES CHANGES TO SCHOOL CALENDAR WITH A GRADUAL TRANSITION TO OLD ACADEMIC CALENDAR APRIL-MAY BREAK

- JONALYN A. PABALATE

The Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines has made amendments to the school calendar in response to the gradual shift to an April-May break. This adjustment aims to align the academic schedule with the changing needs and preferences of students and educators. Traditionally, the Philippine school calendar followed a June-March academic year, with two months break during April and May. However, in recent years, there has been a growing consensus among stakeholders to shift the break to April and May to align with international academic calendars and provide more flexibility for families. This change allows students to engage in extra- curricular activities during summer to further develop their skills and explore their interests. This extended break also allows educators to undergo professional development activities, ensuring they are equipped with the latest teaching methodologies and strategies to deliver quality education. The amended school calendar promotes improved well-being and work-life balance for both students and educators. The break in April-May offers a longer duration for individuals to rest, unwind and recharge, which helps to minimize the chances of burnout and promotes better mental well-being. The extended break allows for a more balanced pace of learning throughout the year, reducing the intensity of the workload during the regular school term. These benefits contribute to a more holistic and fulfilling educational experience for both students and educators.
