ILLUMINATING THE EVERYDAY: CULTIVATING AN APPRECIATION OF ECONOMICS IN STUDENTS
KRYSTALINE P. DIMATULAC
Economics, often perceived as a complex and abstract subject, holds a deep influence on our daily lives. In cultivating an appreciation for the everyday value of economics among students, educators play a vital role in bridging the gap between theoretical concepts and practical applications. It is essential to make students recognize and embrace the relevance of economics in their daily lives.
The first step in making students appreciate the everyday value of economics is to draw connections between economic principles and their daily experiences. Teachers can use relatable examples, such as purchasing decisions and supply and demand in local markets, to demonstrate how economic concepts directly influence their lives.
In addition, one of the most obvious and relatable aspects of economics is personal finance. Educators can emphasize the importance of budgeting, saving, investing, and understanding credit to empower students in making sound financial decisions. Integrating real-life scenarios and discussions on topics like student loans, credit cards, and mortgages enables students to see the significant relevance of economic principles.
Economics is not confined to individual choices but extends to a global scale. By exploring international trade, economic policies, and global markets, students gain a broader perspective on the interrelation of economies. Examining current events, such as trade agreements, economic sanctions, or global supply chain disruptions, helps students recognize the global implications of economic decisions.
Cultivating an appreciation for the everyday value of economics involves interpreting the subject and demonstrating its practical significance. By relating economic concepts to personal experiences, highlighting personal finance, and examining global interrelations, educators can empower students to recognize the direct influence of economics in their lives.
