Perspective! LEARNER CENTERED LEARNING (LCL) : AN APPROACH IN ACHIEVING QUALITY EDUCATION
JOSE JOEL S. PALLASIGUI
In a classroom situation, teachers encountered learners with different interests and learning styles, some are fast learners while others learn better through activities. There are different approaches in achieving the quality learning of the learners. Today’s educational platform, learners must be exposed to a learner centered approach.
Learner centered learning is an effective method to improve the academic competency of the learners and enhance skills in different learning areas. Learning focuses on the students through project – making, performance based learning, role playing, interesting educational games and activities and the use of ICT. Teachers are able to expose learners with hands on activity and skills – based approaches. It is the opportunity for the learners to be involved in the teaching - learning process to improve their academic performance. Learners tend to do great when they feel they are trusted and that they are real part of the teaching – learning. It is also important for the teachers to insert some educational games so that the learners will participate on the class discussion.
More over, one of the missions of the department of education is that “No student left behind”. With this, teachers must utilize modern technology in upgrading the capability and knowledge of the learners. The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is now in the trend of our education. Visual images through slides presentation, video lessons, and Internet access can update the learning style of the pupils. Video – based instruction really improves the academic performance of the learners. It gives more enthusiasm among the learners especially when they are watching the relevant situations from the subject being presented by the teacher.
With the entire aforementioned learner – centered approaches, teachers are encouraged to use innovation in terms of their teaching style towards the quality education. Provide learning activities which are suited to the learning preference of the learners. Lastly, be proud you are a teacher, the future of the learners depend on you.
