APPRECIATING LEADERSHIP

-

PERLA G. BANTING

There are thousands of definition one can give to leadership. One best meaning is that, “Leadership differs from management. Because management is an act directing and controlling while leadership is the ability to influence and inspire”. Leadership can be appreciated especially if the leader possesses traits and characteristics whose principle is to work, to serve and to lead the organization that will benefit its people. The act of showing genuine appreciation is a key driver of employee motivation, happiness, and ultimately, organizational success. As leaders, one must embrace this not as a mere management strategy but as a fundamental aspect of leadership philosophy. Appreciation leadership is the secret to keeping employees satisfied in their jobs and to keep their performance level up. Indeed, when a person is appreciated, they deliver their best work. They feel recognized in the value that their work brings to the organization and it makes them want to continue doing that. In school setting, leaders are called principals and members are the teaching and non-teaching staff. Appreciation in school play a crucial role in keeping the personnel motivated and in high spirit in order to perform better and in higher standards. A simple and direct expression of saying good job, great work, keep it up, thank you and many others are some forms of verbal appreciation. Thoughtful gifts such as flowers, chocolates or small token are other common ways to show appreciation. Appreciation is important in school. School heads and their staff can possibly have better working relationship if they appreciate one another. It helps to build trust and respect. People who give recognition are better liked and perceived as more innovative than those who don’t. This is just as true in the workplace as it is in private life. Recognizing others, especially your own team members can have a powerful impact on their happiness and yours.
