ISYU-SURI (SYNTHESIS AND UNDERSTANDING THROUGH REFLECTIVE INTERVENTIONS)

It is a quite sad reality that most students find the subject Araling Panlipunan or Social Studies as a boring one. Primarily, this is because the subject is dealing with history, economics, and politics and even of government, constitution and society. Particularly Araling Panipunan 10 that examines contemporary issues with relations to the mentioned fields of Social Sciences. The contents of the subject are highly objective and in nature that it should be taught in an exact and comprehensive way. This makes the students boring and disinteresting sometimes. Mauricio et al. (2017) as mentioned by Nitcha (2020), Humanities and Social Studies related subjects are still neglected by students. They also enumerated the major challenges of Araling Panlipunan teachers such as dependence on books, too much weight on memorization and prior dislikes of students on the subject.

Moreover, the Regional Mid-Year Assessment in Araling Panlipunan 10 revealed a lower Mean Percentage Score, signaling a need for innovative solutions to bridge the learning gap and improve student behavior. To address these challenges, the study used a comprehensive innovation called Isyu – SURI. It is used a guided worksheet for the student, the said worksheet was provided after the teaching – learning activities in the classroom at the end of each lesson. This project is grounded on Problem-Based Learning (PBL), known for its hands-on, inquiry-driven approach. The project further incorporates reflective learning interventions, drawing on John Dewey's notion of reflective learning as an active and dynamic and rooted into the application of Gibb's Reflective Learning Cycle as a guiding framework. The findings revealed that the proposed innovation – Isyu-SURI helps student to improve their scores. During the fourth quarter assessment, the Mean Percentage Score (MPS) demonstrates a significant improvement across all sections. This positive shift is attributed to the successful implementation of the Isyu-SURI innovation project. The effective integration of Isyu-SURI has played a pivotal role in advancing educational outcomes, fostering a more robust and elevated academic performance. This suggests that Isyu-SURI has proven to be a valuable initiative. The results underscore the efficacy of innovative educational approaches in elevating students’ performance.
