BASICS OF PROGRESS

- MICHELLE M. VIRAY

Everything starts from basics.

Eight learning areas are being taught across the K to 12 Curriculum. It includes English, Filipino, Science, Mathematics, TLE, MAPEH, Edukasyon sa Pagpapahalaga, and Araling Panlipunan. These subjects are not the foundation of learning. The initial step is the mastery of Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic.

Reading is the process of interpreting written symbols by decoding them. The majority of the teachings are written in books, and the only way to decode the content is to become proficient reader. Academic and social development will progress slowly if this talent is not mastered. When a student is unable to develop this talent or falls behind their classmates, low self-esteem will result. It is a component of learning the language that is spoken in the classroom.

Writing ability is another factor to take into account. Students that can write have the opportunity to express themselves. Writing is the process of putting a message into printed form. When it comes to language literacy, every person should be able to read and write from the very beginning of their academic career.

Part of arithmetic is numerical literacy. All children need to be proficient in this area. It covers topics pertaining to numbers, particularly science and mathematics.

These ought to be learned by the time they enter primary school, if not earlier. Because of this, primary school teachers have a crucial role in ensuring that all students master these three fundamental skills, which will help them learn more complicated skills and enhance their cognitive abilities. They are dealing with a really severe issue when it comes to the obligation they bear. These three abilities are the foundation for advancement.
