CULTURALLY RELEVANT PEDAGOGY TO IMPROVE STUDENT PERFORMANCE IN ARALING PANLIPUNAN
CRIZALDY SAMPANG ESTRADA
Establishing inclusive learning settings and fostering cultural sensitivity require acknowledging
and appreciating the cultural diversity of pupils. In the Philippines, teaching social
science in the twenty-first century requires being sensitive to, appreciative of, and inclusive
of the varied cultural origins, experiences, and viewpoints of its pupils.
Instructors must make sure that the curriculum accurately captures the history, customs,
languages, and contributions of the many ethnic groups and communities that make up the
Philippines. Include case studies, multicultural literature, and materials that speak to the
experiences and identities of the students.
Culturally sensitive teaching is a useful technique. Make use of educational tactics and
resources that are meaningful to students and relevant to their culture. To relate social
science ideas and problems to students' cultural origins, passions, and experiences, draw
on these elements. Include oral histories, music, art, storytelling, and other culturally appropriate
media in your lessons.
In the classroom, respect for cultural diversity must be practiced. Encourage a welcoming
and courteous learning atmosphere where all students, regardless of their cultural
backgrounds, feel appreciated, respected, and supported. Promote candid communication,
reciprocity, and compassion among pupils while addressing any stereotypes, biases,
or prejudices that could surface. Set a good example for your kids by showing consideration
for cultural differences and treating them all with kindness and decency. Show pupils that
you genuinely care about their cultural experiences and origins by attentively listening to
them without passing judgment or harboring any prejudices.
The student-centered paradigm is still a useful strategy for successful instruction. Adapt
instruction to the varied requirements, preferences, and learning styles of pupils from various
cultural backgrounds. Give students the chance to participate freely in the learning
process and to add their own viewpoints and experiences to group projects, homework
assignments, and class debates.
The processes need to be studied for ongoing learning and adaptation. To continuously
enhance teaching strategies and foster a more welcoming learning environment, keep up
with the latest findings, recommended practices, and available resources on culturally responsive
education. You may also include input from peers, communities, and students.
Araling Panlipunan teachers can foster an inclusive and empowering learning environment
where all students feel respected, valued, and equipped to thrive academically and
socially by incorporating culturally responsive teaching practices into their lessons.
