Homonhon Island circumferential road gets P100-M funding

-

GUIUAN, Eastern Samar – The historic island of Homonhon in Guiuan, Eastern Samar, is getting PHP100 million this year to build the long-planned circumferential road.

The allotment will cover the opening and upgrading of a 21-kilometer road in Casuguran, Bitaugan, and Habag villages, said 4Ps Party-list Rep. Marcelino Libanan during the project launch on Sunday.

“I urged the village officials and residents to prepare because the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is committed to making better double-lane roads,” Libanan told reporters.

Libanan is also hopeful that construction of the remaining 40 kilometers will be funded in the next few years to fully complete the project.

The road project will also connect the villages of Inapulangan and Habag, which are currently only accessible by boat.

The circumferential road has three bridges and will be implemented through multi-year funding.

Guiuan Mayor Annaliza Gonzales Kwan said the project will allow easier access from one tourism site to another.

“This will promote historical tourism as it provides better accessibility to the Magellan landing site. Currently, the site can only be accessed through an unpaved and muddy road,” Kwan added.

Kwan said the project is a welcome development for the island since it will complement the comprehensive development plan for Homonhon Island.

The plan includes coordination with all stakeholders for the development of the island, such as the mining companies that operate on the island.

The island is known for the 1521 Magellan Landing. (PNA)
