NURTURING A CULTURE OF CRITICAL THINKING AS A MASTER TEACHER IN THE PHILIPPINE CLASSROOMS
CRISTINE G. CACHUELA
As a Master Teacher, I am more a facilitator of learning of my students. I am passionate about fostering a culture of critical thinking within the classroom. I firmly believe in moving beyond rote learning, instead creating an environment where students are encouraged to question, analyze, and connect. In this rapidly evolving world, it is more crucial than ever to equip our students with the ability to think deeply and make informed judgements.
In my classroom, students are prompted to delve deeper into contemporary issues, examining the sources of information and considering the implications of these issues on their lives and the broader society. I strive to instill in them the confidence to not just accept information at face value, but to question, explore various perspectives, and draw their own conclusions.
Moreover, as a Master Teacher, I also have the privilege of conducting classroom observations to my fellow educators within the Araling Panlipunan department. This allows me to share my insights and experiences with fellow educators that promotes a broader culture of critical thinking not only the department but across the school. Through these observations, I provide constructive feedback and share strategies that teachers can use to encourage critical thinking, such as open-ended questioning, collaborative projects, and reflective exercises. As we navigate the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century, it is my commitment as an educator to equip our students with the critical thinking skills they need to become informed, responsible, and proactive members of society.
