RISK FACTOR FOR POOR MENTAL HEALTH
MIRNA A. BULAON
Mental health is crucial for overall well-being and enables individuals to function psychologically, emotionally, and socially. Risk factors for poor mental health include childhood abuse, which can lead to severe distress and increased risk of developing psychological disorders like depression, anxiety, and personality disorders. Adverse environmental circumstances, such as weather conditions and natural disasters, can also negatively impact mental well-being. Living in a positive social environment can provide protection against mental challenges. Biology plays a significant role in mental health, with conditions like autism, ADHD, bipolar disorder, depression, and schizophrenia being passed down through families. Lifestyle choices, such as smoking, poor diet, alcohol consumption, and risky sexual behavior, can also impact mental health, potentially causing psychological harm and contributing to depression.
Mental health problems can be identified through various signs, such as changes in eating habits, reduced energy levels, reclusiveness, persistent despair, substance abuse, confusion, mood swings, pick-fighting, unidentified voices, self-harm thoughts, and difficulty performing daily tasks. These warning signs can indicate potential negative changes in well-being.
