The recent call from health experts to regulate vape products in schools casts a stark light on the pervasive and insidious influence of e-cigarettes within educational settings. Dr. Maricar Limpin's revelation about the covert packaging of vape devices, disguised as innocuous lanyards, underscores the alarming ease with which these harmful substances infiltrate the school environment.

The collaboration between health authorities and the Department of Education (DepEd) in addressing this issue signifies a recognition of the urgent need to safeguard the health and well-being of students. The initiatives outlined in DepEd Order 14 and DepEd Memorandum 111, aimed at curbing vaping within school premises, are commendable steps towards creating a safer and healthier learning environment.

Dr. Riz Gonzalez's reference to Executive Order No. 26, which establishes smoke-free environments, serves as a poignant reminder of the broader societal efforts to combat tobacco and nicotine use. However, the inclusion of Electronic Nicotine and Non-Nicotine Delivery Systems under EO 106 highlights the evolving landscape of tobacco control, necessitating comprehensive regulatory measures to address emerging threats.

The parallels drawn between the tactics employed by the tobacco industry and the proliferation of vape products are particularly concerning. Despite claims of harm reduction, the underlying reality, as emphasized by Dr. Gonzalez, is one of harm introduction, especially when considering the vulnerable demographic of developing children.

As advocates for public health, it is incumbent upon us to heed Dr. Gonzalez's call to action. By raising awareness, reporting violations to local authorities, and leveraging the power of media, we can collectively combat the normalization and glamorization of vaping among youth. The health and future of our children depend on our unwavering commitment to confronting this looming health crisis head-on.

The unchecked proliferation of vape products in schools represents a grave threat to the health and well-being of students. It is imperative that we take decisive action to regulate and mitigate the impact of these harmful substances, thereby ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment for all.
