A tongue-in-cheek qualifier to the artistry and quality of their creations, de Gournay cites and likens its artisans’ level of dedication to that of a prominent Ming dynasty potter, who was unable to make the porcelain as thin and as light as the emperor had requested and in despair, hurled himself into the kiln.
