New York-based Filipino events designer Jerry Sibal shares his styling insights and design tips

- INTERVIEW: MARITESS GARCIA REYES

Known for creating spectacular events across the globe, Jerry Sibal, founder of his eponymous design company in New York City, has wowed many a crowd with his oral masterpieces and set design. It was a modest start for him. “I went to New York with only USD 300 in my pocket. I was broke on my second day. But I did not stop there,” says Sibal in an intimate interview during his visit to Manila early this year. Back in the day, Sibal used to teach Chinese painting at the Ayala Museum. He was also doing dance, interior design, and architectural projects. Everything changed when he went to the Big Apple.

With perseverance and dedication came his resounding success. One of his biggest breaks came when he became the head oral designer for the globally celebrated events styling rm Preston Bailey for several years. In 2016, Sibal worked at Wynn Palace in Macau and was responsible for designing the world’s

rst ower-themed casino owned by Steve Wynn.

PT: What are the essential styling tools for entertaining at home?

JT: For floral arranging, the essential tools are knives, clippers, vases, floral foam, waterproof tape, hand gloves and [naturally, your choice of] fresh flowers. For flowers, always use what is seasonal. If my project is in the Philippines, I try to use local exotic flowers.

TIP: Personalise it and [introduce] details through table cards, and plates, among others. Surprise your guests.

PT: What are the trends now when it comes to styling and entertaining?

JS: Minimalist, modern, timeless elegance, luxurious but not over-the-top.

TIP: Although oral scents create wonders, when entertaining, always keep in mind that it should never overpower the food [or cause ] discomfort to guests with allergies. Take inspiration from fashion, movies, interior design, and music. Combine classic design with modern technology such as using LED lights on the table centrepieces to create a dramatic look.

PT: Which are your favourite Philippine flowers?

JS: Vandas and phalaenopsis orchids are my favourites. They are very graceful, elegant, and regal. But in [truth], I love all types of flowers. They’re all beautiful to me.

PT: What’s your signature style?

JS: Classic with a twist.

PT: What’s your most memorable project?

JS: One of them was working with Sir Richard Branson of Virgin Atlantic Airways on two major events: the launch of their maiden flight from London to Chicago in 2005 and of the First Class Cabin in 2007. I was only given one day to come out with my design concept. Thank God, they were blown away by my design.

Another was a wedding for the owner of Halston Fashion House at the luxurious Hotel Setai in Miami— a three-day beach event for 500 guests. We built a tent on the sand for the wedding reception and decorated it in art deco black and white. The custom-designed vinyl dance floor and a humongous art deco crystal ceiling chandelier were the main focal points. Philip Starck Ghost chairs were used to create a modern look. Guests were greeted with colourful fireworks [display] leading to the tent. The following morning, the event tent was turned into a cosy, relaxing and casual Miami beach section for brunch.

PT: How do you address challenges in your projects?

JS: Proper planning, knowledge on logistics, experience not only in designing but also in the technical and engineering aspects of the event.

Always have a contingency plan in case of any disaster. Always have options. You will never know. Anything could happen so have faith on the Creator and always put God first.
