For Italian design institution crafting great furniture involves a carefully considered mix of style and durability

-

ost design institutions pride themselves on setting trends. However, given the change of pace, many brands compete for commercial attention. The trick is to stand out with regard to two things: a tradition of excellence and a penchant for innovation.

For Milanese atelier Flexform, it has always been about tradition over passing fads. The family-run enterprise chose to listen to the needs of its customers—a move that led to the creation of its brand name, a contraction of the words “flexible forms.”

Amidst the futuristic design inspirations that became au courant following the Second World War, the Gamberti brothers decided to offer something different: a design philosophy rooted in tradition. Drawing from the pioneering craftsmen of Brianza, the Gambertis opened their workshop in 1959, catering to both domestic and global markets. The sofas and armchairs from their streetfront display would furnish villas overlooking Lake Como, as well as the foyer of Milan’s legendary opera house La Scala.

Clients have noted the durability not just of each product, but of the overall designs. Flexform never tries to be too flashy or exaggerated. Instead, it focuses on the experience of home, creating pieces that are both comfortable and fashionable.

After gracing fine households one both sides of the Atlantic and well into the Middle East, China, and South America, Flexform is now open in Manila with a showroom designed by local architect Ed Calma.

True to its vision of showcasing the finest Italian workmanship, all products are still crafted in in Brianza with a small but highly competent employee pool. Timeless design indeed finds no pressure to keep up with the times, and Flexform trusts that time itself will be the one keeping up. Such is the aplomb that continuously animates this artisan workshop’s enduring aesthetic.
