Hermès’ spring/summer 2019 collection offers functional pieces;
One can always count on the brand’s new collections to be a treasure trove of sorts ... a group of objects that are both beautiful and functional
It is often said that variety is the spice of life—and luxury goods manufacturer Hermès certainly agrees. For spring/summer 2019, the brand presents an assortment of carefully curated items that are representative of its different métiers: Bags, Luggage, and Small Leather Goods; Equestrian; Men’s Shoes; Men’s Silk; Women’s Silk; Belts; Hats; Women’s Shoes; Accessories; Jewellery; Watches; Perfume; Special Orders; Beach; and Home.
This season’s selection of leather goods come in stunning colours, with standouts such as the wicker and calfskin Kelly Mini Picnic bag in sunshine yellow and the Cosmos, which is hand-dyed with two colour spectrums to produce a one-of-a-kind item. To those looking for something more classic, the Birkin Sellier 35 in natural cowhide and the Musardine in panama straw and Epsom calfkin are excellent choices. Ladies have much to look forward to for jewellery and accessories, as the brand explores the use of materials like rose gold and palladiumfinish metal. The Chaînes Au Carré necklace is an object of interest; liquid, fluid, and made entirely of chains, it forms a perfect square when laid flat, and is designed in such a manner that it can be worn in a variety of ways.
The men’s collections boast some exciting items as well, including a sky-blue nubuck loafer on a brick-red rubber sole, and wool and silk twill scarves in vibrant patterns commissioned from artists. As the maison has always revered craftsmanship and artistry, it has always been fond of such collaborations. Polish illustrator Jan Bajtlik did the sketch for the Sweet Dreams scarf, which features fantastical beasts done entirely using the design. Terre d’Hermès, an award-winning fragrance for men first released in 2006, returns this year as an aromatic eau de toilette, with Sichuan pepper and bergamot notes bringing a balance of vitality and potency.
It is the special orders category that captures Hermès’ fondness for the whimsical. Long renowned for its top-quality equestrian accessories, the brand dips a hypothetical toe into the fish pond, coming up with a variety of hobby essentials such as a luxe fishing rod, a leather and wicker creel, a sycamore box that holds 23 flies (13 of which were designed by Hermès), and feather charms. Porcelain trays and vases, lacquer boxes, and cashmere blankets comprise the home collection, while colourful swim essentials like towels and bags are the highlights of the beach selection.
One can always count on the brand’s new collections to be a treasure trove of sorts; not limited to a shoe or clothing line—which Hermès takes much pride in—but a group of objects that are both beautiful and functional, allowing them to hold more meaning for the users.
