British pop artist David Hockney is known for his use of bright colour and for being deeply inspired by nature— elements that also defined the work of post-Impressionist master Vincent van Gogh. To show how Van Gogh influenced Hockney, the Van Gogh Museum showcases select masterpieces by each artist side by side. If you’ve seen the 2014 film The Monuments Men, you’ll be familiar with the US military officers who ventured into Europe to recover artworks confiscated by the Nazis during World War II. Though Lincoln Kirstein was one such officer, he’s perhaps best known for his establishing of the New York City Ballet and his reputation as a Renaissance man and patron of the visual arts. Celebrating the 500th anniversary of Venetian master Jacopo Tintoretto’s birth, this exhibition has travelled from the Doge’s Palace in Venice. The artist’s first retrospective in North America will feature almost 50 paintings and over a dozen works on paper from across his career. Expect stately portraits of Venetian aristocracy as well as works depicting various religious and mythological tales. nga.gov
