Dear Rica,

Kindly answer this: My wife and I were having sexy time last night but when I finished, I noticed that there was also blood in my ejaculate. My wife is not on her period, and I have no blood in my urine. Is there something wrong? I’m afraid that my wife would think I’m cheating on her (But that’s another story).

Bloody Paranoid Hi Bloody Paranoid,

Yes, it can be alarming to see blood, especially in your semen. But actually, this is fairly common. This condition is called hematospermia.

Most of the instances of hematospermia go unnoticed, or are unreported, because some men are afraid to talk about it.

So it’s a good thing that you asked! Madami tayo matutulungan!

There are many different causes for hematospermia. The most common is an inflammation of your seminal vesicles (the glands that produce most fluid in your ejaculate). It can also be caused by inflammation of your other manly parts (prostate, urethra, testicles, and epididymis) or trauma to your manhood. Pwede ring infection in your reproductive system.

Usually, hematospermia will clear up by itself and treatment is not necessary.

However, it’s always a good thing to have it checked just to be sure.

This becomes imperative, especially if you notice that it’s been happening for more than 10 ejaculations, or a span of two months, or if you’re over 40-yearsold.

These factors could mean something more serious is going on. Other than these things, hematospermia can also come from a sexually transmitted infection like gonorrhea or chlamydia.

So if you’re having unprotected intercourse with someone who’s infected, then that can be the culprit. Hmmm…

Just to give you an idea of what would happen when you go for a checkup – your doctor may ask you for a semen analysis and culture, blood work, urinalysis and culture, rectal exam for your prostate, or ultrasound.

I suggest you go to your trusted doctor soon as the sooner you find out the diagnosis, the sooner you’ll get rid of the blood and the paranoia. Good luck!

PS. There’s nothing to be scared of if you’re not cheating (But that’s another story).

PPS. If you are having intercourse with someone else though, do practice safe sex. #takeitfromthesexymind
