La Salle out to regain share of lead

- By NIKOLE JAVIER

Defending champion La Salle is looking to bounce back from a painful defeat to rival National University when it takes on alsoran Adamson in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday, April 17, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Lady Spikers and the Lady Falcons face each other in the first offering of the women’s action at 2 p.m. before fellow Final Four returnee Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws tackle University of the East Lady Warriors at 4 p.m.

Sans reigning Rookie of the Year-most Valuable Player Angel Canino, La Salle suffered a fourset loss against two-time finals rival National University Lady Bulldogs last Sunday that pulled them down at No. 3.

Canino sustained a right arm injury during the Holy Week break and had since sat out the past three games.

A victory would enable the Ta”based squad to join league leaders NU and University of Santo Tomas on top. Both UST and NU are sporting 10-2 cards.

Sophomore opposite spiker Shevana Laput has stepped up in Canino’s absence though her effort fell short against the Lady Bulldogs.

With FEU’S massive win over UST last week that assured the latter the remaining semifinal berth, Adamson has been eliminated from the race despite ending a six-game losing skid against University of the Philippines.

At 3-8, the Lady Falcons are playing for pride and final position in the standings which is a far cry from their strong Final Four showing last season.
