DepEd official killed in road mishap

- By ARIEL P. AVENDAÑO

SAN LUIS, Aurora – A high ranking official of the Department of Education (DepEd) official was killed while four others were critically wounded when the passenger van they were riding slammed into a huge tree along a highway in Sitio Hiwalayan, Barangay Bacong, San Luis, Aurora, before midnight, yesterday.

Emelyn dela Torre Macaraeg, 45, Assistant School Division Superintendent - Aurora, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Premier General Hospital.

The other victims were identified as Regie Bryan Roxas; Dianne Rose Gonzales; Nerissa Calano; and Joan Bagaoisan. The driver of the van, a certain Teejay Millado, was also seriously wounded.

Police surmised Millado lost control of the vehicle as they passed a slippery section of the road resulting in the accident.

Local residents, however, would rather blame the local office of the Department of Public Works and Highways for the debacle, noting the poor maintenance of the road section has caused numerous accidents in the past.
