Hot Antonio keeps share of lead
Grandmaster Joey Antonio retained his share of the lead in the Open 50+ even as GM Eugene Torre jumped to 13th place in Open 65+ after six rounds of the 27th World Senior Chess Championships in Acqua Terme, Italy late Sunday.
Antonio split the point with Peruvian GM Zuniga Julio Granda in 56 moves of a Sicilian game to slightly improve to 5 points on four wins and two draws.
Joining Antonio in the crowded leaderboard are Granda, Georgian GM Zurab Sturua, French GM Eric Prie, Ukrainian International Master Alexander Reprintsev and German IM Oliver Brendel. Torre, for his part, kept his title bid alive after edging Matthias Kierzek in 54 moves of Bogo-Indian Defense to jump from joint 25th for a two-way logjam at 13th to 14th place.
It was the 66-year-old’s second straight win since losing to Boris Malisov of Israel in the third and drawing with German Fide Master Boris Gruzmann in the fourth round.
Antonio next faces Prie while Torre battles FM Boris Gutkin of Israel in the seventh round.
