On this Day…
February 10
In 1950, boy wonder swimmer Mark Spitz was born, he got off to a slow start at the Mexico Olympics, winning only two golds, a silver and a bronze! By Munich, however, he'd overcome mental and largely imagined physical problems and made a clean sweep of seven golds - all in recordbreaking time. Much encouraged in his early days as a swimmer by his father Arnold, he stopped ". taking Hebrew lessons when they got in the way of his training. As Arnold explained to the rabbi, Even God likes a winner!"
In 1840, Queen Victoria married Prince Albert. For her he was an "angel" and "perfection." For the populace, he was a fortune-hunting foreigner after England's "fat Queen and fatter purse," and Parliament was quick to cut his proposed income. At the wedding, Albert was "awkward with embarrassment"; it was freezing cold, and 300 guests were crammed into the Chapel Royal. The queen's dress was "a tasteless muddle" and had a train so short that all the bridesmaids had to huddle together! The ecstatic couple went off to begin their brief honeymoon at Windsor, and the following day they were up so early that one wit commented that this was "not the way to provide us with a Prince of Wales!"
